The robot industry may usher in an inflection point. Recently, the National Bureau of Statistics released data showing that in November 2019, the output of industrial robots reached 16,080 units, an increase of 4.3% year-on-year. This is the second consecutive month of positive returns after the industrial robot production began to fall into negative growth in September 2018. Experts said that due to the decline of the automotive industry, the demand for industrial robots fell sharply, but in the long run, the substitution of machines is irreversible, and the robot industry will maintain a high degree of prosperity in the future. However, industrial robot growth will slow and service robots will maintain high growth.

In recent years, industrial robots have entered a rapid development track in China and even the world. The transformation and upgrading of China's manufacturing industry's industrial structure, the continuous increase in labor costs, and the structural shortage of labor have all become the driving force for the development of the industrial robot industry.

Data show that from 2016 to 2018, the annual output of robots in China increased from 70,000 to 140,000, with an average annual growth rate of more than 40%. In 2018, China's industrial robot installations were about 154,000 units, surpassing Europe and the Americas, ranking first in the world. Among them, the density of industrial robots has increased rapidly. According to incomplete statistics, it reached 140 robots per 10,000 employees in 2018, which is three times that of 2015.

But it is surprising that from September 2018, the industrial robot industry has taken a drastic turn, from a double-digit high growth that has been maintained before to a negative growth. "Affected by the main robot application market of automobiles and their parts, the growth rate of robots has declined." Qu Daokui, chairman of the China Robot Industry Alliance, said.

Economic Daily reporter learned that handling and loading and unloading are still the main application fields of robots, especially in the automotive and electronic information industries, accounting for 60%.

Fortunately, after more than a year of adjustment, the robot industry is slowly coming out of decline.

"Although this year, the robot industry is under pressure and some core technologies and key technology components are subject to people, this is exactly the golden period for the robot industry to optimize its structure and achieve healthy development." Luo Junjie, Deputy Director of the Equipment Industry Department of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology From the domestic perspective, the application field and scene are constantly expanding, and the development momentum of robots is still strong.

"The short-term decline of the robotics industry is only cyclical and will continue to grow rapidly in the long run." Shi Jinbo, co-founder and CEO of Liqun Automation, told the Economic Daily that at the just-concluded 2019 Japan ’s IREX Robot Exhibition, the company independently developed The full range, 9 series and 30 models of products have attracted worldwide attention for the first time. In Shi Jinbo's view, the key to Li Qun Automation's failure in the international arena lies in independent innovation. "From the application level to the top level, including the robot design, system, control, and application, the core technology independently developed is the advantage of Liqun's automation products." Shi Jinbo said.

According to the forecast of China Electronics and Information Industry Development Institute, the size of the robot market in the next three years will maintain a growth rate of more than 27%, and the size of the Chinese robot market in 2019 will exceed 76.1 billion yuan. From the perspective of market segment structure, the scale of industrial robots still has an advantage, but the growth rate has slowed down, and service robots will maintain rapid growth. The intelligent transformation of enterprises, the continuous optimization of industrial application scenarios, and the application of new technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data have become the main factors driving the rapid development of the Chinese robot market.

Data show that currently Chinese robot companies have occupied nearly one-third of the Chinese market. In future market competition, compared with international giants, Chinese companies also have many competitive advantages.

"China's industrial robot industry has a large gap compared with developed countries, but there are no related applications abroad in some areas, such as general-purpose robots, which is an opportunity for the market to make a big breakthrough." Shi Jinbo believes that China's manufacturing system is very large. There are a lot of links that need to be improved by automation technology, and Chinese robot companies can optimize more targeted. "This requires getting the customer's process requirements to the front line, and then applying the process to the robot in advance, which can serve more integrators or customers in the future."

At present, robot applications are mainly concentrated in the automotive and electronics industries, and the promotion potential in other fields is huge. Electronics, automotive, new energy and other fields are only a small part. With the advancement of intelligent manufacturing, the application of industrial robots is rapidly developing from the automotive and electronics industries to metallurgical, light industry, metal processing, petrochemical, food and beverage, pharmaceutical and health industries. Its application industry has expanded from 87 categories of national economy in 2015 to 129 categories in 2018. In the future, service robots will extend from past robots such as sweeping and cleaning to multi-dimensional education, medical care, escort, and distribution. (Wang Yichen)
